Behind, Not Behind

Welcome to Not Behind

For a long time, I thought I was the problem.

Growing up, I spent so much energy trying to fit in that I often stood out even more. I watched other people seem to breeze through things that felt impossible for me. Staying organised. Remembering things. Keeping up. Finishing what they started.

I used to wonder:

"Why can everyone else do it, but I can't?"

On the outside, I looked like I was coping. On the inside, I was exhausted. Constantly trying harder. Constantly feeling like I wasn't quite measuring up. Feeling like I had so much potential, but no idea how to reach it.

What I didn't realise at the time was that I wasn't lazy, careless, or not trying hard enough.

My brain simply worked differently.

Years later, after being diagnosed with ADHD in my late 30s, so many pieces of the puzzle finally started to make sense. Looking back, I realised I wasn't behind at all. I was running a different race with a different set of instructions.

Working in a New Zealand primary school has opened my eyes even further. I've met incredible young people who remind me of myself. Bright, creative, funny, capable kids who often spend their days wondering why things seem harder for them than everyone else.

That's why I created Not Behind.

Not Behind isn't about labels. It's not about fixing who you are. It's not about pretending ADHD is a superpower or pretending it doesn't have challenges.

It's about being real.

It's about understanding your brain, building confidence, finding strategies that actually work, and recognising that struggling with something doesn't mean you're failing.

Most importantly, it's about knowing you're not alone.

If you've ever felt like everyone else received a handbook for life that you somehow missed out on, this space is for you.

You are not broken.

You are not lazy.

You are not less capable.

And you are definitely not behind.

Disclaimer

The resources created by Not Behind are based on personal experience, research, observation, and a genuine passion for supporting New Zealand tweens and teens.

I am not a medical professional, psychologist, therapist, or ADHD specialist. These resources are not intended to diagnose, treat, or replace professional advice, assessment, or support.

As someone who grew up with undiagnosed ADHD and only received a diagnosis in my late 30s, I understand many of the challenges, frustrations, and questions that can come with feeling different. Working within a New Zealand primary school has further ignited my passion to create practical, relatable, and down-to-earth resources that help young people feel understood, supported, and capable.

Every resource is created with care and aims to provide encouragement, strategies, and real-world insights. However, every young person is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. Parents, caregivers, and educators are encouraged to seek professional guidance where appropriate.

My goal is simple: to help New Zealand tweens and teens realise they are not behind—they are simply on their own path.
