If you're reading this as a parent...
Can I tell you something?
You're probably doing better than you think.
Parents often carry a weight that nobody else sees.
The late-night Google searches.
The meetings at school.
The appointments.
The forms.
The conversations that don't always have clear answers.
The constant wondering...
"Am I doing enough?"
"Did I handle that the right way?"
"Should I have been more patient?"
"What if I get this wrong?"
If you've asked yourself those questions, you're not alone.
In fact, I'd be surprised if you hadn't.
Because when you care deeply about your child, you'll naturally worry about whether you're giving them what they need.
The truth is, there isn't a handbook that perfectly prepares you for raising a child with ADHD.
Every child is different.
Every family is different.
What works beautifully for one child might not work at all for another.
That can be frustrating.
It can also be incredibly lonely.
Especially when other families seem to make parenting look effortless.
But here's something worth remembering.
You're seeing the hardest parts because you're living them.
Other people are seeing snapshots.
You're seeing the mornings where everyone is running late.
The forgotten school bag.
The emotional after-school meltdowns.
The homework battles.
The tears.
The celebrations.
The victories that nobody else notices.
You're living the whole story.
And that's why it often feels heavier.
One thing I've learnt is that children don't need perfect parents.
They need safe ones.
Parents who keep showing up.
Parents who are willing to learn.
Parents who apologise when they get it wrong.
Parents who celebrate effort as much as achievement.
Parents who make home feel like a place where mistakes don't change how deeply they're loved.
That's what children remember.
Not whether every lunchbox was perfectly packed.
Not whether every morning ran smoothly.
Not whether every homework task was completed without frustration.
They remember how home felt.
Did they feel accepted?
Did they feel understood?
Did they know they could come to you after a hard day?
Those things matter more than perfection ever will.
There will be days when your patience runs out.
Days when you say something you wish you could take back.
Days when you're simply exhausted.
You're human too.
Give yourself the same grace you're trying to teach your child.
Something else I'd love every parent to hear...
Please don't measure your child's progress against another child's timeline.
Progress isn't always obvious.
Sometimes it's hidden inside the small things.
The child who remembered their drink bottle today after forgetting it all last week.
The teenager who asked for help instead of giving up.
The young person who managed a whole day at school when last month they couldn't.
Those moments deserve celebrating.
They may seem small to someone else.
But they're often huge steps forward.
Children don't need to hear that they're only successful when they achieve something extraordinary.
They need to know that trying matters.
That courage matters.
That kindness matters.
That getting back up after a difficult day matters.
At Not Behind, that's what we want every young person to believe.
Not because life is always easy.
Not because every challenge disappears.
But because confidence isn't built by never struggling.
It's built by learning that your struggles don't define your worth.
If your child has ADHD, they'll probably remember far less about the strategies you used than the way you made them feel.
Did they know they were loved, even on the hard days?
Did they know they weren't a problem to be solved?
Did they know they were enough?
Those are the things that stay with us.
So if you've been lying awake wondering whether you're doing enough...
This is your reminder.
You don't need to have every answer.
You don't need to get everything right.
You don't need to be the perfect parent.
You just need to keep showing up.
Keep listening.
Keep learning.
Keep loving them exactly as they are.
Because your child doesn't need perfection.
They need you.
And that is more powerful than you probably realise.
Your journey as a parent won't always be easy.
There will be challenges.
There will be questions.
There will be days that test you.
But there will also be laughter.
Growth.
Moments that take your breath away.
And one day, your child may look back and realise something that matters more than anything else.
They were never expected to earn your love.
It was there all along.
From all of us at Not Behind...
Thank you.
Thank you for trying.
Thank you for learning.
Thank you for showing up, even when it's hard.
Because every child deserves someone who believes in them before they learn to believe in themselves.
And that belief can change a life.
Your timeline.
Their journey.
Your love.
