Why I Called It Not Behind

Why I Called It Not Behind

There are two words that quietly shaped so much of my life.

Behind.

Not in a race.

Not at school.

Not on a report card.

Just...behind.

Behind everyone else who seemed to remember things.

Behind people who could stay organised.

Behind friends who somehow kept their rooms tidy, handed assignments in on time, replied to messages, remembered birthdays and made life look effortless.

I spent years wondering why everything seemed to take me so much more effort.

From the outside, I looked like I was coping.

Inside, I was exhausted.

I became incredibly good at hiding it. Smiling through it. Working twice as hard to appear like I had everything under control.

The hardest part wasn't struggling.

It was believing the struggle meant something was wrong with me.

Years later, after being diagnosed with ADHD in my late 30s, so many pieces of my life finally made sense.

Looking back, I realised something that completely changed the way I saw myself.

I wasn't behind.

I had simply been measuring myself against a timeline that was never designed for me.

That realisation became the beginning of Not Behind.

Not because I have all the answers.

Not because I've figured everything out.

But because I know what it feels like to sit quietly wondering why everyone else seems to find life easier.

And I know I'm not the only one.

Working in a New Zealand primary school has introduced me to so many incredible young people.

Bright kids.

Funny kids.

Creative kids.

Kind kids.

Kids with enormous potential who already believe they're falling behind before they've even had the chance to discover how they learn best.

I've also met parents who are doing everything they can.

Teachers who genuinely care.

Whānau who simply want to understand.

The more people I met, the more I realised this conversation needed to happen.

Not another conversation about fixing kids.

Not another conversation filled with judgement.

A conversation built on understanding.

That's what Not Behind is here to be.

You'll notice something as you explore this space.

We don't promise miracle solutions.

We don't pretend ADHD is either a superpower or something that needs to be hidden.

Life is more complicated than that.

Some days are brilliant.

Some days are messy.

Sometimes you'll feel like you're making huge progress.

Other times you'll feel like you're right back where you started.

That's okay.

Progress isn't always obvious while you're living it.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is understanding yourself a little better today than you did yesterday.

That's enough.

Whether you've just been diagnosed, you're supporting someone with ADHD, or you've simply landed here because life feels harder than it looks for everyone else, I hope you find something here that reminds you of one thing.

You are not lazy.

You are not broken.

You are not less capable.

And you are definitely not behind.

You're on your own timeline.

Your own journey.

Your own way.

Welcome to Not Behind.

I'm really glad you're here.
